Chances are, your Mac can run macOS Big Sur
The Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 Mac Pro are the only two Macs that are capable of running Mojave that won’t be able run Catalina when it is released later this year. Digging deeper into this, it appears the Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 Mac Pro could only run Mojave providing the graphics card had been upgraded to a Metal-compatible card – see Apple’s. Catalina on (1) 2011 MacBook Air 13″, buttery smoothly. Only 4GB’s but works buttery smoothly. Catalina on (1) 2008 iMac 24″, internet, mail photo’s, and all default apps work fine, but only 4GB ram so it can be a tad slow. 8GB’s might be better. Catalina on (1) Late 2012 iMac 27″, buttery smoothly (officially supported machine).

Your Mac provides several tools to help you identify it. The simplest is About This Mac, available by choosing About This Mac from the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen. The other is the System Information app. Find out how to use these tools to identify your Mac.
If you don't have your Mac or it's not able start up, use one of these solutions instead: Update to the latest mac os.
- Find the serial number printed on the underside of your Mac, near the regulatory markings. It's also on the original packaging, next to the barcode label. You can then enter that serial number on the Check Coverage page to find your model.
- The original packaging might also show an Apple part number, such as MLH12xx/A (“xx” is a variable that differs by country or region). You can match the Apple part number to one in the list below to find your model.

Macos boot from external disk. If you can't start up from the bootable installer, make sure that the External Boot setting in Startup Security Utility is set to allow booting from external media. Choose your language, if prompted. Select Install macOS (or Install OS X) from the Utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. Install macOS on the external drive. Run macOS on the external drive by pressing Alt/Option at start up on an Intel-powered Mac, or pressing and holding the on switch on an M1 Mac. Use VirtualBox to Install Windows on the External Drive. This is the tricky part of the process, at least in the sense that we’re going to trick Boot Camp and the Windows installer into thinking your external drive is actually your main internal drive, or in the parlance of Windows, your C: drive. This option on boot trick works for quite literally any boot volume, whether it’s an external USB drive of any sort, a Thunderbolt hard drive, boot DVD, CD, the Recovery partition, even in dual-boot environments with other versions of OS X, or a Linux or a Windows partition with Boot Camp, if it’s bootable and connected to the Mac it will be visible at this boot manager.
